AIcrowd Badges and Design System
A badge system for an AI challenge platform: one mark, four kinds of contribution, three tiers of earning it.
The problem
A platform where people solve ML challenges, publish notebooks and argue in the open had no way to recognise any of it except winning. A reputation system had to credit the rest.

Structure
Badges organised by what a member actually does: practise problems, challenges, discussions, notebooks. Each activity got its own container drawn around the same centre.
-
System
One constant mark, the platform maze with a heart inside it, so the set runs to well over a hundred badges without coming apart. Only the inner glyph and the frame change.
-
Progression
Three tiers per badge so a member sees the next one coming, not only the one they hold. Firsts are drawn once in spectrum rather than metal, because a first is not a degree of anything.
-
In place
Tested on the profile and achievements screens with progress shown honestly, including the badges still locked.
Outcome
A system of 100+ badges, shipped as the platform’s reputation layer.
AIcrowd is a platform where people solve machine learning challenges, publish notebooks and argue about approaches in the open. A reputation system had to recognise all of that, not only the winning.
So the badges are organised by what a person actually does on the platform: practise problems, challenges, discussions and notebooks. Each activity has its own container drawn around the same centre. The cog belongs to practise, the dial to challenges, the speech bubble to discussions, the rounded tile to notebooks. You can tell which part of the site a badge came from before you have read a word of it.
At the centre of every one is the AIcrowd maze with a heart inside it, the mark the platform already had. Keeping it constant is what lets the set run to well over a hundred badges without coming apart. Only the small glyph in the middle changes, and only the frame around it says where you earned it.
Each badge is earned three times over, in bronze, silver and gold, so a member can see the next one coming rather than only the one they hold. Firsts are treated apart from that ladder. A first like, a first submission, a first comment: those are not degrees of anything, so they are drawn once, in a full spectrum gradient rather than a metal, and they read as a different kind of event.
The system was tested where it would be used, on the profile and achievements screens, with progress against each badge shown honestly, including the ones still locked. The gold studies were made to check the line work held up as a physical object, at the weight and depth a real medal would have.
